Chapter 6: Measurement and Problem Solving

Section 6.1: Precision, Accuracy, and Estimation
Essential Ideas

  • Measure of Length
To measure an object is to assign a number to its size. The number representing its linear dimension, as measured from end to end, is called its measure or length.

  • Precision refers to the accuracy of the measurement tool, and the accuracy refers to the rounding that you do with the answer.

  • The standard units of length with which you should be familiar are:
U.S.:   inch, foot, yard, and mile
Metric:   meter, centimeter, and kilometer .

  • You should also learn the metric prefixes:
kilo (times 1,000); hecto (times 100); deka (times 10)
deci (times 1/10); centi (times 1/100); milli (times 1/1,000)
