There are many problems throughout the text labeled IN YOUR OWN WORDS.
Just relax. Do not be afraid to give your opinion. For the most part,
these questions do not have "right" or "wrong" answers. You should spend
about five minutes answering each of these questions.
See Example 1. Since a ratio is a quotient of two numbers it can be
written as a fraction. We also know that fractions can be reduced and
some fractions are reduced to be whole numbers. For example, when working
with fractions
but when considering these as
ratios, we say
That is, the ratio of 4 to 6
reduces to the ratio of 2 to 3, but the ratio of 4 to 2 reduces to the
ratio of 2 to 1. Be sure you also use two numbers when stating ratios.
See Example 2.
See Example 3.
Translate each of these statements into fractional form; for example,
Problem 38a, first form the ratio 60 to 3 and then write it as a fraction 60/3.
Reduce the fraction to 20/1 (not 20). Then state the result as a ratio,
namely 20 to 1.
Read carefully the example in the directions. Be sure to state your
answer as a ratio.
