Section 3.1: Polynomials
Homework Hints

Problems 1-4
There are many problems throughout the text labeled IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Just relax. Do not be afraid to give your opinion. For the most part, these questions do not have "right" or "wrong" answers. You should spend about five minutes in answering each of these questions. Look at Example 4 when answering Problem 4.

Problems 5-10
See Example 6; remember that the degree of a term is the number of variable factors in that term.

Problems 11-16
See Examples 5 and 7; remember that the degree of a polynomial is the largest degree of any of its terms. A polynomial with one term is called a monomial, one with two terms is a binomial, or with three terms a trinomial.

Problems 17-34
See Examples 1, 2, and 3.

Problems 35-40

Problems 41-46
You may need to review some of the material in Section 2.1 and Table 2.1.

Problems 47-50
One of the most difficult parts of word problem is taking the time to read what they actually ask. The best homework hint for these problems is to read slowly, reread, answer, and then read the problem again to make sure you have answered the question that was asked.
