Section 3.2: Similar Terms
Essential Ideas

  • Distributive Property
    We first stated the distributive property in Section 1.2, but in Chapter 1 we did not have the symbolism of algebra, so we restate this property in this section, using variables a, b, and c to represent any given numbers:
    a(b + c) = ab + ac.

  • Similar Terms
    If two or more terms are exactly the same except for their numerical coefficients, we call them similar terms.

  • Adding or Subtracting Variable Expressions
    Use the distributive property and add similar terms.
