Essential Ideas

  • In the notation 24, the number 2 is called the base, the number 4 is called the exponent, and the entire expression 24 is called a power.

  • Scientific Notation
    The scientific notation of a number is that number written as a power of 10 or as a decimal number between 1 and 10 times a power of 10.

  • When you multiply numbers, the numbers being multiplied are called factors. The process of taking a given number and writing it as the product of two or more other numbers is called factoring. The result is called a factorization of the given number.

  • A prime number is a natural number with exactly two distinct factors. A composite number is a number with more than two factors. Will any number besides 1 have fewer than two factors?
