Section 1.4: Rounding and Estimation
Essential Ideas

  • Procedure for Rounding A Decimal Number
Step 1. Locate the rounding place digit. This is identified by the column name. In addition, we sometimes refer to two place accuracy and which means that the decimal should be accurate to two digits after the decimal point. Similarly, for three place accuracy, four place accuracy.
Step 2. Determine the rounding place digit.
      a. It stays the same if the first digit to its right is a 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4.
      b. It increases by 1 if the digit to the right is a 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. (If the rounding place digit is a 9 and 1 is added, there will be a carry in the usual fashion.)
    Step 3. Change digits.
      a. All digits to the left of the rounding digit remain the same (unless there is a carry).
      b. All digits to the right of the rounding digit are changed to zeros.
    Step 4. Drop zeros.
      a. If the rounding place digit is to the left of the decimal point, drop all trailing zeros.
      b. If the rounding place digit is to the right of the decimal point, drop all trailing zeros to the right of the rounding place digit.
